Drop It And Drive Urges Increased Road Safety With New School Year Looming

Nanaimo, British Columbia – Newly headquartered in Nanaimo, Drop It And Drive Founder, Karen Bowman partnered with Nanaimo RCMP and local elementary schools on a road safety campaign before the end of the school year. The idea was to deliver road safety messages to parents and communities through art. Students from kindergarten to grade 7 created ‘Do The Right Thing’ posters featuring reasons and pictures of why parents should pay attention to road safety.

Grade 1 - 3“One grade 1 student wrote, ‘Please do the right thing because…I don’t want you to get hurt. I love you,’’’ says Karen. “Our goal was to create awareness by allowing kids to share their thoughts through simple messages and art. When you hear something like ‘…kids like to feel safe when in a vehicle,’ that should get parents’ attention.”

Stories over Statistics is the foundation of the Drop It And Drive national program. People get bombarded with statistics on so many road safety issues that it doesn’t take long for them to just become numbers, forgetting that each statistic is a person.

Award-winning film director, Werner Herzog’s profound documentary ‘From One Second To The Next‘ is hard to watch and hard to hear the stories of families torn apart; of ‘nice’ young men killing innocent people because they were texting while driving. But, it’s a documentary that has huge potential to save lives if enough people watch it and care enough to change.

Jeanne Zoschke, Bowman’s friend and Nanaimo neighbour, shared her story of her stepmom being dragged 30 metres because a young woman swerved across four lanes when she dropped a cup of coffee. “It’s amazing she lived, but it was a life altering injury where she lost all of her skin, tissue and had crushed bones from the waist down.”

The new school year is just around the corner and Drop It And Drive is urging parents to set the right example for kids by avoid all distractions when driving. All drivers, especially those travelling through school zones are strongly urged to slow down and pay attention to avoid becoming part of another tragic story.
