According to information found on the Education For The Driving Masses web site, statistics from the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) show that 650 pedestrians were injured in 2009. Further, the State of Vancouver blog by Frances Bula ran a piece in mid 2010 titled “Vancouver: Worst city in Canada for pedestrian deaths.” According to the article, far more pedestrian deaths happen in Vancouver than Toronto or Montreal. Frances’ follow up article which ran in Vancouver Magazine last year (Vancouver’s Deadly Roads), stated that “more pedestrians die here [Vancouver] each year than in any other place in Canada.”
Distracted driving prevention isn’t just about drivers, it’s also about pedestrians [and cyclists]. So, if a grade 4 student understands this concept, hopefully it’s not too much of a stretch for the rest of the population.
